Movies and how it can change one’s perspective

“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite” a sentence that is packed with emotion and gives us a lot to think about. This is one of my favourite quotes from the movie- The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Movies can move people, and allow them to see different emotions whether it be joy, sadness, anger, and more. It’s all portrayed through the lens and I believe it has the power to change one’s perspective in life, in either a good or bad way.

Growing up, I always found myself watching movies, whatever was on the television at the time. A few that I can think of are all the Harry Potter movies, Inception, and animated films such as Toy Story which give such meaningful stories. It became a habit to lie on my living room couch, come home after a long day of school without changing my clothes, and turn on the TV to see a brand-new movie every time. It was honestly one of the most exciting times of my day when I could see a new world and new characters with different personalities and how they were able to overcome the problems they faced. It was always a constant for me throughout my life as watching so many movies allowed me to imagine different realities and understand situations I would not otherwise.

An example of one of the movies that impacted and changed how I view life is La La Land, a musical romance set in Los Angeles. It follows the two lead characters, Mia aspiring to be an actress in the challenging environment of the entertainment industry, and Sebastian who has a love for jazz and wants to open up his jazz club. They unexpectedly meet at a party and have rather rude introductions, however they soon find that they are compatible. Sebastian and Mia start to fall in love and support each other in following each other’s dreams. However, La La Land shows us that not everything has a happy ending. Mia begins to find success in acting so she may be moving away from her life in Los Angeles and Seb has to put in the time and effort for him to fulfill his dream of opening his jazz club so the couple starts arguing and soon realize that it may not work out between them. They knew that a difficult decision had to be made as it wouldn’t work out even though they both loved each other but they had to break up to pursue their dreams.

La La Land played a big part in how I perceive life. It made me realize life will throw curveballs at me, people I care deeply about can leave or something may happen to them at any time. The reality of life is that there will be challenges and some things have to be compromised but time moves on and we need to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones. Films such as La La Land captivate us, and can truly impact someone like myself.
